Mrs. Thorne's Website
Hi! My name is Katie Thorne! Welcome to my website!
I began my teaching career with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from CMSU in Warrensburg, MO. I graduated in December of 2001 and substitute taught in the Lee's Summit School District for the spring semester. I earned a teaching position at Peculiar Elementary School teaching kindergarten in August of 2002, where I stayed for four years. During that time I received my Masters Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Saint Mary's. I also got married in October of 2003.
Creekmoor Elementary, in the Raymore-Peculiar school district, opened for my fifth year of teaching where I had the position of second grade teacher. I stayed in second grade for four years. During this time I earned my Specialist Degree in Educational Technology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. I moved back to kindergarten and taught for a year there, and then returned to second grade where I taught two more years. During this time I earned another Masters Degree in Literacy Education, as well as finishing my certification for a K-12 Reading Specialist.
It was at this time that my family decided that we should move north. My husband is a barber and we have a barber shop in Sugar Creek. He didn't really like driving 45 minutes to work and 45 minutes back when we lived in Greenwood, MO. We also have a family farm in Chula, MO that we visit often. It took us about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get there also! It just wasn't logical to stay where we were. My in-laws live in Kearney and have always spoken highly of it. We decided that I needed to apply and see if I could get hired. It was an overwhelming feeling going through the interview process again. Luckily, I was hired to teach second grade here at Kearney Elementary! I am enjoying learning new things and meeting new people! I am excited to continue my teaching career here! It is a great community that I am proud to be a part of. I moved to fifth grade for two years after that, and this is my second year back in second grade!
In addition to my husband, Brandon, I have a daughter named Bentley who is nine years old, and she is a fourth grader at Southview Elementary. I also have a son named Hunter who is six and in first grade at Southview Elementary. We love to play outside, go to the zoo, read books, ride four wheelers, and just have fun where we can. Hopefully this gives you a better look at who I am as a person and as a teacher.
I love teaching and I feel very connected to each of my students and their families. I value mutual respect, open communication, and a safe environment where all students can learn. I created this website so you and your child can have a resource that can give extra practice for some of the things we are focusing on in class and keep up to date with various things in our classroom.
If there is anything that you would like me to add onto our website, please let me know! In addition, please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, comments, or compliments. I would love to hear from you! I am looking forward to an awesome year!
